Back to School Eye Exams: Setting Your Child Up to Succeed

About 80% of what children learn comes through their eyes. Why a back-to-school exam belongs on every checklist.

About 80% of what children learn is through their eyes, which makes vision health essential before the academic year begins.

Why it matters

A pediatric exam catches refractive errors early, supports academic performance, manages digital eye strain and can reveal underlying health conditions. Conditions like amblyopia respond far better when treated young.

Warning signs to watch

Frequent squinting, holding books too close, headaches, reading difficulties, covering one eye, or poor hand-eye coordination, any of these deserve a prompt examination.

What the exam looks like

Visual acuity testing, refraction assessment, eye alignment evaluation and a health screening, in a kid-friendly practice with orthoptic expertise. First exams are recommended at six months, age three, school entry, and annually after that.
